The SELSEY 57 EXHIBITION
THE SELSEY 57
In September 2013 Arts Dream received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to research and deliver a website based on the 57 men and women who lost their lives in WW1. During the last 5 years we have developed the Selsey 57 website, presented 2 exhibitions of the research findings, and uncovered new information about Selsey and the lives of the Selsey community at the time of the war. We have organised drama, writing, and art workshops with students and the community, and developed extensive teaching aids based on the men and their stories.
We have become engrossed in their lives and their commitment to make a better life for future generations. We have met their descendants, and learnt so much about them and their sacrifices. We have discovered information not listed in any other records, and The Selsey 57 website has been used by researchers nationally, with information from our site quoted and used for historical reference in other research papers and documentation. We have received fantastic accolades on the level of research from academics, professionals, the families, and our own community.
None of this would have been possible without the excellent research from Marilyn Smith, who has worked tirelessly as a volunteer over the last 4 years to uncover the histories and narratives of the 57. Arts Dream can only thank her for her amazing research skills, enthusiasm, and concentrated and sustained effort over the years.
In 2018 Selsey can be secure in the knowledge that the men and women from Selsey who were involved in WW1 will never be forgotten, and their histories will live on in our hearts and minds. A special and important legacy for Selsey.
